What is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP), is a therapeutic experience in which the medicine ketamine is used as a tool to help participants access deeper layers of emotion and awareness. Utilizing ketamine as a catalyst to go deep within the self and leaning in to expansiveness and curiosity.. The goal is to promote healing, self-understanding, and reconnection—with oneself, others, and the world.
What to Expect
What Happens in a Group KAP Session?
In a group format the process is structured thoughtfully and intentionally, involving several phases:
1. Preparation (Virtual Sessions)
Before the actual ketamine experience, all participants meet virtually for three preparation sessions. These sessions are essential to:
· Introduce group members to one another
· Educate participants about ketamine and its effects
· Set intentions for the journey
· Create safety and psychological readiness
· Establish group trust and cohesion
2. Active Medicine Session (In-Person Group Setting)
· Setting: Participants gather in a comfortable, calming physical space with mats, pillows, eye shades, and music designed to support a deep inner journey.
· Medicine: Each participant takes ketamine in lozenge form, which dissolves in the mouth. The onset begins within 15–30 minutes, and the psychedelic effects last around 90 minutes to 2 hours.
· Experience: While under the effects of ketamine, participants typically lie down, eyes covered, and go inward. Music supports the journey, often enhancing emotion, imagery, and introspection.
· Facilitators: Two trained professionals—Bethany and Merritt in this case—are present throughout to:
o Monitor safety
o Provide grounding and emotional support
o Help participants navigate difficult experiences, if needed
Importantly, while each person is having their own internal journey, the shared group space can foster a powerful sense of connection and shared healing.
3. Integration (Virtual Group Session)
A few days after the ketamine session, the group reconvenes virtually to:
· Share experiences (to the extent each person is comfortable)
· Reflect on insights, emotions, or memories that emerged
· Begin the process of integrating those insights into daily life
· Receive continued support from facilitators and group members
Integration is considered crucial for transforming the psychedelic experience into lasting personal growth.
